Wines from Dobruja
Vines may be grown anywhere in Dobrogea. Every step you take, everywhere you turn, the land provides excellent conditions for viticultural. The relief of this region, consisting of a succession of mounds and even grounds, does not rise any serious problems for viticulture; light and heat are abundant allover the region; the soil enjoys good structure and fertility and it contains all chemical elements that the vine needs. The water generated by precipitations is by no means excessive, which lays down the proper premise for obtaining top quality wines.
It is no surprise that under such favorable circumstances, viticulture has developed in Dobrogea at a quick pace, currently holding a place of utmost importance.
The Dobrogea vines currently cover just over 25,000 hectares. They are joined together in several vineyards that should by all means be included in any Bacchic quest. Just below its halfway line, the region is cut across by the famous Murfatlar vineyard, expanding throughout the Carasu valley and comprising three viticultural centers: Murfatlar, Medgidia and Cernavoda. Going up north, on the eastern side of the region, we come across the Istria-Babadag vineyard. To the north, on the Danube banks, we encounter the ancient vineyard of Sarica-Niculitel, with three viticultural centers: Tulcea, Niculitel and Macin. Towards the southwestern border of the region, in the vicinity of the ancient Danubius, there lie the Ostrov, Oltina and Aliman vines. This list may not leave aside the vines from Daieni and Harsova, those of Adamclisi and Baneasa, nor those of Mongalia and Chirnogeni, all integrated into the viticultural landscape of Dobrogea.
The region we are in provides the best conditions for wine-making, as well as for producing table grapes. Even grape varieties cultivated especially to obtain raisins may be grown here, because they require extra heat during ripening and they are less resistant to harsh winter temperatures.
The wines are however the products bearing the most visible imprint of the favorable cropping conditions. The Dobrogea plantations yield noble wines with distinct quality features. Along with Cotnari and Pietroasa, the Murfatlar vineyard represents a viticultural area that may yield natural sweet wines from grapes picked while withering. Significant brands of rich and bright red wines as well as dry or semidry white wines standing out through their powerful personality may be produced throughout this region.
Embarking on a quest for Dobrogean wines, we shall be scheduling four halts on our itinerary: Murfatlar, Istria-Babadag, Sarica-Niculitel and Oltina.
